WHY A MUSIC FESTIVAL?

In today’s world where the arts budgets are being slashed in the public schools, it is our goal that art be preserved in the community, and that people of all ages and backgrounds have easy and affordable access to performances and programs.

The Newport Contemporary Music Festival will offer a diverse repertoire of musical performance. Each performance has been carefully chosen in order that each concert has mixed genres, remaining interesting and attractive to everyone, with at least one popular name, a new work, and lesser known works. It introduces the young generation to new and varied styles of music, while still being able to relate to something familiar.

WHY NEWPORT?

Newport is one of the most beautiful locations in America. It is a hub for some of the world’s biggest events, making it a popular destination for tourists, as well as other Rhode Islanders. Our aim is to create a long term music festival, with extensive community outreach programs. An innovative international contemporary music festival will not only strengthen the community, but would continue to bring renowned international artists to the Newport and Rhode Island stage.

WHO ARE THE MUSICIANS?

The ensemble for The Newport Contemporary Music Festival will be comprised young, high level musicians from around the state. In addition, several concerts will invite high school aged students to join the ensemble, allowing the older, more experienced musicians to mentor the younger, as well as expose them to new styles of music, and the atmosphere of a professional environment.

HOW DOES IT BENEFIT NEWPORT COUNTY AND THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND?

The Newport Contemporary Music Festival will continually revitalize the community. The festival will bring in not only people from around the state, but from around New England as well as foreign tourists. The programming of the concerts has been carefully selected so that certain “series concerts” will be given during week days, attracting more people to stay in Newport for an extended period of time. Island businesses will profit, as well as in the surrounding communities.

HOW DOES IT BENEFIT STUDENTS?

It is essential that students be exposed to the arts at an early age. The Newport Contemporary Music Festival will invite the world’s most experienced and renowned musicians, and students should have access to them, free of charge. The students will have master classes with visiting composers and musicians, small seminars on how to go about choosing higher level education, and smaller courses on copyright laws, marketing and networking.

In addition, the resident festival ensemble would be comprised of professionals and students, exposing the students to a professional atmosphere, connections and experience playing a vast repertoire of music, motivating them to pursue their professional careers in Rhode Island.
